Stefaan Callens

Stefaan Callens (1966) obtained his Master’s Degree in law from the KU Leuven (Belgium) in 1989. He studied at the Université de Poitiers (France) and obtained a Master of Laws degree from the American Duke University in 1990.

His doctoral thesis was received in 1995 by the KU Leuven and he has since then been a Professor of Health law at the Faculty of Medicine of the KULeuven.

He founded Callens Law Firm in 2000 and deals- on the level of aid as well as of procedures- with hospital law, pharmaceutical law, legislation concerning medical devices, disciplinary rules and competition in the health care. He offers legal advice to a great number of hospital administrators, medical councils and advisory boards.

Stefaan is a member of many organizations such as the Telematics Commission in the health care for which he chairs the Telemedicine Cell, the National Assessment Commission on Termination of Pregnancy  and the Medical Law Section of the International Bar Association (which he chaired from 2000 to 2004). He regularly publishes books and contributions concerning the organization of the health care, hospital legislation, pharmaceutical legislation and e-health.
